Unique Melaka
Why Melaka
Melaka is the oldest state in Malaysia. Founded in 1403 by Parameswara, the prince from Sumatra, it was colonized by the Portuguese in 1511 and occupied by the Dutch in 1641. In 1826, Melaka became part of the British Straits Settlement. The declaration of independence was made by the first Prime Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman at Padang Pahlawan on 20th February 1956, which eventually led to the independence of Malaya on 31st August 1957.
According to history, Malaysia and China's relations began in the era of the Melakan Sultanate, during China's Ming dynasty. China's Admiral Cheng Ho made his way to Melaka five times out of his seven expeditions to the Indian Ocean. Princess Hang Li Poh's marriage to Sultan Mansur Shah of Melaka and unions between local natives and the Chinese is the origin of the "Baba and Nyonya" culture, documenting the close ties between China and Malaysia.
In 2008, Melaka was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
